About Shorinji Kempo

Doshin So, Founder of Shorinji KempoShorinji Kempo (少林寺拳法 Shōrinji Kempō is a modern martial art created by Doshin So (宗 道臣, 1911-1980) in 1947, who incorporated Chinese and Japanese martial arts to create a new fighting style as a way of teaching the philosophy of Shorinji Kempo. Doshin So, is more commonly referred to as Kaiso within Shorinji Kempo – meaning “The Founder.”

Shorinji Kempo was created with the aim of developing people who were healthy, morally upstanding, courageous and who have a strong sense of justice. In a sense, the goal of Shorinji Kempo is to create an ideal world of peace and prosperity for all. By improving individuals, Kaiso believed that it would have a positive impact on entire countries.

The three main aims of Shorinji Kempo are to develop a healthy body through physical training, a healthy mind through spiritual training, and to develop a comprehensive system of self-defense.

Shorinji Kempo PracticeShorinji Kempo is not for people who go looking for fights; we emphasize the philosophical and strategic advantages of never initiating an attack. We emphasize the defensive nature of the Art at all points, and we never seek to intentionally hurt another person. Shorinji Kempo is non-competitiveShorinji Kempo Practice, and our training emphasizes working with a partner in the spirit of cooperation and understanding. We base our training on two key principles: the Unity of Mind and Body, and the Unity of Strength and Compassion. And finally, Shorinji Kempo is a comprehensive self-defense system with a balance of “hard” and “soft” techniques that is effective for men and women of all ages.
